A Civil Wedding in Newmarket

There’s something so quiet about a civil wedding in Newmarket. It’s intimate, relaxed, and full of emotion in the simplest way. It's just the two of you, a licence, someone allowed to marry you, and the people you asked to stand there.

I have also photographed a civil day downtown at Toronto City Hall, with portraits after at Osgoode Hall. If you're looking for a location with a bit more going on, that building, that square, that walk is for you. However, if you're looking for something more calm and close to home, Newmarket, or somewhere else in York Region is for you.

When photographing a York Region civil wedding, the ceremony lasted roughly 20 minutes. Afterward, we were able to stick around inside and out of the building for another hour to get some photographs of the couple and family members. This ceremony was followed by a lunch reception at Joia on Main in Newmarket, Ontario.

What a civil wedding is here

A civil wedding is the legal marriage without a religious service. Ontario still wants the same quiet pieces: a valid Ontario marriage licence, an authorized officiant, and two witnesses who are actually in the room.

The Town of Newmarket will do the legal part with you. Their officiants work at the Municipal Offices on Mulock Drive, in the courtyards there, or they will come to a place you choose. A backyard or a restaurant or another town in York Region are all places they will travel to.

It does not have to look like a Saturday ballroom. It can be Friday afternoon. It can be the people you love and a short script. It can still feel like a wedding.

The licence is not the ceremony

It’s easy to focus on the paperwork. The licence matters. So does the hour you actually say the words.

The licence is the document. You apply, you bring identification, you sit for an appointment. In Newmarket that happens by appointment only at 395 Mulock Drive. The Town says it usually takes half an hour, maybe a little more. The licence is good for three months, and only in Ontario. You can pick it up in Newmarket even if the ceremony is somewhere else in the province. Or you can pick it up in another municipality and marry here.

The ceremony is the other appointment. You book a date with the Town, you fill in their questionnaire, and you meet the officiant before the day. Both you and your partner go to that meeting. Then you show up with the licence and two witnesses.

Fees live on the Town pages, and they have not always agreed with older versions of the same site. When booking your ceremony, you should confirm the current licence and ceremony amounts on Getting Married and Civil Ceremonies before you plan around a number you found last year.

Where Newmarket and York couples actually marry

Newmarket’s own rooms are the Municipal Offices and the courtyards. Indoors, the Town books Fridays from 10am until 3pm. The courtyards are listed as available at other times. If you want another address, including your own home, their officiants will go, any day, including holidays, on a time you work out together.

Two witnesses have to be there. If you do not have them, the Town can sometimes provide official witnesses for an on-site ceremony. They do not cap the guest list for their own rooms or for an off-site they attend. That is their rule, not a promise from a restaurant or a park. When choosing a location, you should also confirm numbers with whoever owns the room.

York Region has other civic rooms if Newmarket’s Friday window does not fit.

East Gwillimbury marries people in Council Chambers at the Civic Centre in Sharon, most Fridays from 10am to 3pm. Their page says the ceremony is usually five to twenty minutes, including the register, and that photographs and video are allowed. As I mentioned previously, I have photographed one of those mornings. It was a small elopement there, then lunch at Joia on Main in Newmarket. That day lives here. As of their current marriages page, East Gwillimbury is offering civil ceremonies only through the end of August 2026, then again in 2027. It is important to check their availability and confirm before you hold a date.

Vaughan uses the Garden Room at City Hall, and in summer the garden just outside it if the weather holds. Aurora uses Town Hall, and from May to September the Petch Log House when the season allows.

How the short day usually feels

A civil hour is a short day if you let it be one. Licence already in hand. Consultation already done. You arrive, you marry, you sign, you step outside.

Some couples stop there and go to lunch. Some want portraits in the same town. In Newmarket, Fairy Lake is a walk from Main Street, not from Mulock, so build the drive if you want both. Some treat their civil wedding as the legal piece and save the larger gathering for another weekend.
